What Are Wisdom Teeth Removal and Why Do You Need it?
Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars that typically come in during your late teens or early twenties. They often need to be removed because there isn’t enough room in your mouth for them to grow in properly, they can become impacted (stuck under the gum), grow in at an angle, crowd your other teeth, or cause pain and infection.
Common reasons for removal include:
- Impaction: They’re trapped beneath the gum or bone
- Crowding: Pushing existing teeth out of alignment
- Infection or decay: Hard-to-clean areas become problem spots
- Cyst formation: Fluid-filled sacs can damage surrounding bone and teeth
Not everyone needs them removed some people’s wisdom teeth come in just fine. Your dentist or oral surgeon will usually monitor them with X-rays and recommend removal if they’re causing or likely to cause problems.

How Does The Wisdom Teeth Procedure Work
Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last teeth to emerge, typically between ages 17 and 25. When they need to come out, here’s how the procedure works:
Before the procedure Your dentist or oral surgeon takes X-rays to assess the position, angle, and root depth of each tooth. This determines whether it’s a simple extraction or a surgical one.
Anesthesia You’ll receive local anesthesia to numb the area. Depending on complexity and your comfort level, you may also have the option of nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation.
The extraction itself For a tooth that has fully erupted, the surgeon loosens it with a tool called an elevator and lifts it out with forceps — similar to a regular tooth extraction.
For an impacted tooth (one still under the gum or bone), the process involves more steps:
- A small incision is made in the gum to expose the tooth
- Some surrounding bone may be removed
- The tooth is often sectioned into smaller pieces so it can be removed more easily
- Each piece is extracted individually
Closing up The socket is cleaned of any debris. Dissolvable stitches close the gum tissue, and gauze is packed over the site to help a blood clot form and control bleeding.
What you feel The surgical portion is usually completed in about 20 minutes, with total time in the office, including anesthesia, being approximately 45 to 60 minutes
After The blood clot that forms in the socket is critical to healing. You’ll be told to avoid straws, smoking, and hard foods for several days to protect it. Swelling and soreness peak around days 2–3 and most people feel back to normal within a week.
Why Get a Wisdom Teeth Exam at CTX Oral Surgery & Dental Implants?
Wisdom teeth are the last permanent molars to emerge, typically between ages 17–25. When there isn’t enough room in the jaw for them to erupt properly, a range of problems can develop, often without obvious symptoms until the damage is already underway.
Common issues our oral surgeons watch for include:
- Impacted teeth: Wisdom teeth trapped in the jawbone or gum tissue can cause pain, swelling, and recurring infection.
- Crowding & shifting: Erupting wisdom teeth can push neighboring teeth out of alignment.
- Cysts & growths: Fluid-filled sacs can form around impacted teeth and damage surrounding bone and nerves.
- Gum disease & decay: Partially erupted wisdom teeth are nearly impossible to clean properly, making them highly prone to infection and cavities.
Because many patients feel no discomfort until problems are well advanced, early evaluation is key. At CTX Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, our team uses advanced 3D imaging to assess your wisdom teeth and recommend the right course of action before small issues become bigger ones.
