Understanding TMJ Disorders

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull, allowing you to talk, chew, and yawn comfortably.

When the joint becomes injured, inflamed, or misaligned, it can cause pain, limited jaw movement, and other symptoms known as TMJ disorders (TMD).

Common symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing
  • Difficulty chewing or limited range of motion
  • Headaches, ear pain, or facial discomfort

Conservative Care First

Most TMJ disorders can be managed with non-surgical treatments such as bite splints, physical therapy, Botox, and medications. Dr. Oppenheim works closely with patients and their dentists to explore these options first.

When Surgery is Recommended

For patients who do not respond to conservative care or who have severe joint damage, surgical options may be appropriate. These include:

  • Arthrocentesis – flushing the joint to reduce inflammation and improve movement
  • Open joint surgery – correcting structural problems or repairing/replacing the joint in severe cases

Dr. Mark Oppenheim is a dual-degree oral and maxillofacial surgeon with advanced training in TMJ surgery, corrective jaw surgery, and complex facial reconstruction. His approach is centered on accurate diagnosis, patient education, and tailoring treatment to each individual’s needs.
